Confess

The confessions you read within this novel are true confessions, submitted anonymously by readers. This book is dedicated to all of you who found the courage to share them.
The dedication had me intrigued and I knew I was in for something really interesting. The real life confessions combined with the amazing artwork by Danny O'Connor made for an innovative concept. It is one of those books best experienced without knowing too much beforehand, so I'll try to keep it brief.
Auburn Mason Reed suffered a great loss when she was only 15 years old. Five years later, she has moved to Dallas, Texas. Her mind is set on her goals and she is determined to do whatever it takes to meet them. Right when she desperately needs some extra money, she happens to notice a job offer taped to an art studio. She feels an undeniable attraction to the owner Owen Mason Gentry, a loner who drowns his demons in the striking art he creates.Yes, they share the same middle name. Fate ? Finding Auburn at his doorstep is something Owen always hoped for, but never believed could happen. The story is told from alternating POV's(Auburn's and Owen's) and as the story unravels, Auburn's heart wrenching story comes to light while Owen's remains largely a mystery. The ending puts the whole book in perspective and I loved how everything came full circle. My only complaint is that I would have loved an epilogue just to close off the story, a bit more. Nevertheless, I really liked this book and would definitely recommend it, specially if you're a Hoover fan.

A Spool Of Blue Thread

A Spool Of Blue Thread is a pleasant and absorbing family saga which revolves around four generations of the Whitshank family who live in Baltimore. The story is told in parts. The first part details the ebb and flow of the everyday lives of Red and Abby, an ageing couple in their seventies. Their four children Amanda, Jeannie, Denny and Stem are happily settled with children of their own, with the exception of Denny who is the black sheep of the family. As Red and Abby are faced with the challenges of old age and ill health, their children come together in a show of solidarity to help them out. As the story traverses back and forth through time, we are transported to 1959 when Abby and Red first fell in love. The third part of the book goes even further back in time to the 1920's when Red's parents- Junior and Linnie Mae first arrive in Baltimore. Finally, part four comes back to the present where part one had ended. The book moves along at a very leisurely and comfortable pace flitting between generations and the most drama you would find is maybe a fistfight between the two brothers.

The characters are realistic, quirky and full of heart. You will not realise how immersed you are until tragedy strikes and you feel the pang of loss. The story portrays brilliantly the underlying resentment, joys, angst and frustration that are all part of the family dynamics.
However, if there is one complaint, it would be the unsatisfying conclusion to the book. I kept waiting for the climax which never came. It lacked a final resolution making me feel like I read all that history with no other purpose other than simply reading about someones family.

The Girl On The Train

This week, I've been reading The Girl On The Train written by Paula Hawkins. The book is an absolute page-turner and is told from the perspective of three unreliable narrators.
The main character Rachel is the girl on the train. She is a heavy drinker and cannot come to terms with her life after her divorce from her husband.

She has lost her job and rather than reveal this to her flatmate, she continues to take the train into the city everyday, pretending to go to work. Everyday the train slows to a stop near a signal, and from her window she watches a couple who live a few houses down from her old house, where she lived with her husband. She invents their perfect personality and their relationship which she idolizes. They are the only solace in her dreary, pointless life.  Then one day, she witnesses something that doesn't quite add up, which ends up being significant in a shocking crime. She ends up being embroiled in events that are way over her head. And you can't help but cringe at some of the decisions she makes.
As for the ending, I have to admit although I did think of the possibility , I did not see it coming.  Paula Hawkins does a stellar job, this being her debut novel. I had a hard time putting this book down and I would definitely recommend it, specially to those who cannot resist a gripping, whodunit thriller.

Music Matters

I listen to music as much as I read books, so I thought I'd dedicate one blog post every week to share with you all my favourite songs of the moment.
Lets start with my most favourite song :

Stay with me- Sam Smith
It would be safe to say I'm obsessed with Sam Smith at the moment. But who wouldn't be. His voice is mesmerizing in a way that is difficult to describe, its pure bliss. And his vocals in this particular song drive the point home. If there is one drawback, it is that the song is too short. *sigh*
Here's a few more songs that I've been listening to on repeat:
  • Elastic Heart - Sia
  • Latch - Disclosure Ft. Sam Smith
  • Love me like you do - Ellie Goulding
  • I bet my life - Imagine Dragons
  • Snuff - Slipknot
  • Haunted - Beyonce

Until next week :) Cheers.

Nose In A Book

I've wanted to start a blog for quite some time and what better time to start than now, when I'm supposed to be researching Community Detection(BORING). Yes,you got that right. I'm playing the procrastination game and winning hard :P
Going into the specifics, I'll try to keep it short and to the point, while hopefully making sense. Reading is something I have loved ever since I can remember. As a child, one of my favourite things in the world was to curl up with a book and read. There's something about reading a good book that makes me immensely happy and buoyant. In the fast-paced lives that we lead, reading can often become a lost habit. This blog is an endeavour of mine to hold on to the reading habit. What will follow is my humble inputs on the books I read, hoping it will serve of some purpose to people who stumble across it. So, without any further ado, let the reading begin :D
